📝 Ingredients

  • 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour (or bread flour)

  • 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast (1 packet)

  • 1 cup warm milk (110°F / 43°C)

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted

  • 1 large egg

  • 1 tsp salt

  • Extra melted butter, for brushing


👨‍🍳 Instructions

1. Activate the yeast

  • In a small bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast.

  • Let sit for 5–10 minutes until foamy.

2. Mix the dough

  • In a large bowl (or stand mixer), combine the flour and salt.

  • Add yeast mixture, melted butter, and the egg.

  • Mix until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.

3. Knead

  • Knead for 8–10 minutes by hand or with a dough hook, until the dough is smooth and elastic.

  • If sticky, add a little flour (1 tbsp at a time), but don’t overdo it — soft dough = soft rolls.

4. First rise

  • Place dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel or plastic wrap.

  • Let rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

5. Shape the rolls

  • Punch down dough and divide into 12 equal pieces.

  • Roll into smooth balls and place in a greased 9×13″ baking dish or on a sheet pan.

6. Second rise

  • Cover and let rise for 30–40 minutes, until puffy.

7. Bake

  • Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Bake rolls for 15–18 minutes, or until golden brown on top.

8. Butter & serve

  • Brush warm rolls with melted butter for extra softness and flavor.

  • Serve warm!

  • Make ahead: Shape and refrigerate after step 5. Let rise before baking.

  • Whole wheat version: Substitute up to 1 cup of flour with whole wheat flour.

  • Add-ins: Sprinkle cheese, herbs, or garlic butter over before baking.
